In order to reach outstanding heat treatment results, the quenching
after the High Temperature Process has essential importance. According
to the alloying degree of the material the quenching process can be
executed in liquids or gases. The normal way of quenching in e.g. oil
has the disadvantage, that the "Leidenfrostsche Phenomenon" does not allow to control the whole process.
In contrary the quenching in gas has the advantage to have the possibility to control the process and in addition the gas quenching process is environmental conform. Therefore the economical gas quenching process is normaly preferred where possible. The quenching efficiencies can be further optimized by selecting the suitable gas like nitrogen, hydrogen or others also gas mixtures. The control of the quenching process has a large influence of the minimization of distortion effects during heat treatment. The elimination of those distortions in the final manufacturing step is normally very costly.
